Has anyone ever used furniture varnish in their hair to keep hair dye from fading?

So, you're supposed to mix a little varnish in with your dye and color as usual. I've heard second hand that this will keep wild colors from fading so fast but it sounds dicey to me. Has anyone ever used furniture varnish in their hair? How do you think it will effect the overall health of your silky locks and will you be able to dye over it?
