  1. Most retail stores do not haggle, but if you hit them at the right time, who knows? If the sales people work on commission, then they usually have a time period that their sales are counted. For example, a car salesman gets their sales counted at the end of the month. So if you can find out when their "month" ends you might be find the salespeople more willing to listen to you right before their cut-off day. Good luck!
  2. You have some room to bargain, especially when you are buying a set. Remember that the salesperson works on commission in many furniture stores -- so coming in with that is a plus. Bring an appropriate truck -- use any of these: "I am ready to buy today... if we can work on price" "I can take it with me today... if we can work on price" "I set aside this afternoon to buy furniture, so if we can't do better on the price I'll head on over to <competitor>, because they had a set I liked almost as well." "This is my first choice, but if the price is fixed, I'll keep shopping." "I'm sure you need to check with your manager, I'll wait here for a few minutes while you do. I can't wait around all day, so go see what flexibility he has." These same strategies work for car purchases, or anything else sold on commission. The salesperson, because they make so few sales a day, really (really) want you to buy. These strategies don't work if you're 'just looking', so hold your ground.
  3. As a Realtor, we always say that *everything* is negiotable and I really think it is.......Try it, it may work. I would suggest you wait til the end of the month to bargain though. Many salespeople are on a commission and need to make sales by the end of the month.
  4. Dang Sue... You make it sound so easy! I'm ready to go shopping! LoL~ You want to go with me!? I love your 'tude'! You go girl!
  5. i always bargain....i offer to pay cash in exchange for a discount or have them add an end table or lamp if i buy a grouping. I've even settled on the store paying the tax if i buy a complete grouping. Make sure that you have the ability to take home the purchase right away after striking the deal. end of the month is good for bargaining as the sales people have quotas to meet monthly. NEVER settle on the ticket price.....i hate to shop so i tell the sales staff flat out that i hate it and hope to walk out with what i'm looking for
